How to become king of Gingerbread Houses

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could use your CAD skills at home? Particularly if it will make your family happy. A nice tradition this time of year is to make your own gingerbread house. To make a good looking gingerbread house you need a good drawing. You can download all kinds from the web.

But that´s not how we do it! Not if you have MicroStation!

I’m going to show a very useful MicroStation feature for anyone who wants to create their own personal gingerbread house. Here are the simple steps!

Model the house to your liking. Use the tools in Solids Modeling.

And now for the magic. In the task (or ribbon) Surface Modeling there is a tool called Unroll Developable Surface. A long name for a quite simple feature. Start the command, identify your building and select a side you want to flatten to you drawing. Enter two data points in a top view to identify the X-axis. That’s it! Repeat this for all parts of the house. Arrange the parts side by side (see image) and your personal gingerbread house is ready to be printed and cut.

Decorate, light the candles and enjoy the result!

And if the gingerbread house burns or cracks, you could always render a nice image and use for christmas cards!

Sometimes you might have some spare time. Sometimes you are short of time. No mather what, you always need a good watch! And if you don’t have one, you can always make your own. At least if you have MicroStation.

I wanted to model something on a smaller scale, and a watch is a choice as good as any. A few materials and a preset Environment results in a quite good render. I switched between V8i and CONNECT and the result is similar in both cases.

All I wish for Christmas is a faster computer!

Create multiple layers when rendering

MicroStation has a really great rendering engine but sometimes the resulting images could need a little tweeking.

The tip of today is: Create multiple layers when you render an image! If you select Render Settings from the render dialog it is possible to check different types of output layers.

When the image has rendered you can save all the layers to a Photoshop file or as separate images. Select ”Save All Image Layers to File”.

This will create several layers that contains information that can be used to enhance different aspects of the image. Shadow density could be used to affect the shadows, Alpha could be used to hide or replace details in a window, background could be used to replace or alter the image background.

This will not increase the render time to much since most of this information is generated during the render process.
